El Testamento Nuevo De Nuestro Senor Iesu Christo. Heaqui os doy nuevas de gran gozo, que fera a todo el pueblo, En casa de Ricardo del Campo. M.D.XCVI.

The New Testament of the Reina Version revised by Valera. A woodcut on the title-page features an anchor held by a hand emerging from a cloud and two interlacing branches with the legend Anchora Spei. within an ornamental oval frame. Darlow & Moule 8473, Octavo, 6″ x 4″ x 1 1/2″. Very Good.

Complete with the blanks and without facsimiles and is a perfect example as issued by the printer. Our brief research has revealed most examples in institutional collections are incomplete. Examples are very scarce in the private realm usually changing hands without ever going to auction. Bound in a plain 19th century full speckled brown calf leather binding that is rubbed and bumped, joints are cracked and with loss to the spine leather at the foot. The text block fore edges are dyed red as was the common practice of Victorian era binders.

Cipriano del Valera, a Spaniard of good family was born in Seville about 1532 and studied for six years at the University in that city. He entered the Monastery of San Isidro del Campo as a monk. Coming under the influence of the Reformation, he escaped from persecution in Spain and took refuge in England. At Cambridge he was admitted to the B.A. degree, elected a Fellow of Magdalene College  and made M.A. in 1563. He was incorporated in that degree at Oxford in 1565 and afterwards married an English lady. He lived for many years in London where he produced numerous devotional and controversial works. When at about age 50, he began his great task of revising C. de Reina’s version of the Spanish Bible. He devoted his last twenty years to this enterprise which he described as his “evening sacrifice”. In 1602 his finished work was printed and is commonly known as the Reina / Valera Revision. This revision had such a great impact on Spanish readers that it is often compared to the impact of the 1611 King James Bible had upon English readers.
