Cipriano del Valera, a Spaniard of good family was born in Seville about 1532 and studied for six years at the University in that city. He entered the Monastery of San Isidro del Campo as a monk. Coming under the influence of the Reformation, he escaped from persecution in Spain and took refuge in England. At Cambridge he was admitted to the B.A. degree, elected a Fellow of Magdalene College and made M.A. in 1563. He was incorporated in that degree at Oxford in 1565 and afterwards married an English lady. He lived for many years in London where he produced numerous devotional and controversial works. When at about age 50, he began his great task of revising C. de Reina’s version of the Spanish Bible. He devoted his last twenty years to this enterprise which he described as his “evening sacrifice”. In 1602 his finished work was printed and is commonly known as the Reina / Valera Revision. This revision had such a great impact on Spanish readers that it is often compared to the impact of the 1611 King James Bible had upon English readers.
