A textually complete copy of the second folio edition of the King James Bible, known as the “Great She Bible”—named for the corrected rendering of Ruth 3;15- “she went into the citie”. Herbert notes, “The general title is usually dated 1613, though the NT title bears the date 1611.
SHORT DESCRIPTION: The engraved general title page dated 1613 is correct for this edition. Preliminary leaves 2-17 have been inserted from a 1634 4th issue Bible. The collation of the 1634 preliminaries does not match exactly those of this issue resulting in two pages of “these to be observed for holy days” and no page of ” to find Easter forever. This anomaly prevents us from calling this Bible truly complete. Preliminary leaf 18 is correct for this edition. Speede’s genealogies and double page map of Canaan are correct for this edition. The Old Testament and the Apocrypha are complete as called for. The engraved New Testament title page dated 1611 is correct for this edition.The New Testament is also complete with the following notes on Revelation: The title page and leaf 2 are correct for this edition. Leaves 3-7 have been inserted from a 1634 4th issue. Leaves 8-9 (final) have been inserted from a 1617 3rd issue.

Imprinted at London by Robert Barker, Printer to the Kings moft excellent Maieftie: ANNO DOM. 1613. A beautiful full page engraving featuring the familiar 12 tribes of Israel, 12 Apostles, 4 Evangelists, the slain Lamb and God the Father in a cloud overall reminiscent of the scene of Revelation 4. Laid down with minor loss to the lower inner corner and at the lower outer corner. Manuscript on the blank outer margin and the family history of Thomas Barnet on the verso. Good.COMPLETE.
KING JAMES DEDICATION…, 3 pages, prelim leaves #2 & 3a.(first page matches Fry plate 36, #4; third page matches Fry plate 37, #8) Features a wonderful floriated headline, the royal coat of arms and a large floriated initial on the first page. DOUBLE PAGE MAP OF CANAAN BY JOHN SPEED, 2 pages,(matches Fry plate 45, #13) Began by Mr.John More then continued and finished by John Speede. Dated ANNO DOMINI 1611. This is the “shaded” map. Two stains bled through as mentioned above. The restoration of the lower and outer blank margins has resulted in the loss of some of the decorative borders. An ancient owner’s inscription with a quill leaving the book to his daughter is on the right half. Paper is a bit darker, Fair, COMPLETE.
THE GENEALOGIES AND MAP ARE CORRECT PER FRY FOR THIS EDITION
THE OLD TESTAMENT, unpaginated, signed A to Iiii2b, Featuring 59 lines of blackletter type to the full column, chapter introductions and marginal notes printed in Roman type, beautiful floriated headlines at the beginning of each book and large, ornate floriated initials at the beginning of each chapter. The initial P in Psalm 112 contains the crest of Queen Elizabeth’s Spymaster Walsingham. Psalm 112 was most likely chosen to describe his character and memorialize his contributions to the Protestant movement in England. Upper outer ¼ of the leaves in the Torah with staining in various degrees from none at all to moderately heavy then diminishing in Joshua going forward. Ezekiel 40 to the end of the Old Testament lightly to moderately damp stained on the middles of the outer blank margins into a few words of text. The verso of the last leaf of Job has an extensive manuscript family register dating from 1603. Paper is otherwise clean and crisp with only minimal soiling. NO loose, missing, torn pages, clean gutters, strong corners and good margins. A very pleasing example, Very Good, COMPLETE.
THE APOCRYPHA, unpaginated, signed Iiii3 to Ccccc6b, Featuring 59 lines of black letter type to the full column, chapter introductions and marginal notes printed in Roman type, beautiful floriated headlines at the beginning of each book and large, ornate floriated initials at the beginning of each chapter. First Esdras to Judith 10 lightly damp stained on the middles of the outer blank margins touching a few words of text. Judith 10 to the end lightly stained on the corners into the text. Paper is otherwise clean and crisp with only minimal soiling. NO loose, missing, torn pages, clean gutters, strong corners and good margins. A very pleasing example, Very Good, COMPLETE.

THE NEW TESTAMENT, unpaginated, signed A2 to Aa6b, Featuring 59 lines of black letter type to the full column, chapter introductions and marginal notes printed in Roman type, beautiful floriated headlines at the beginning of each book and large, ornate floriated initials at the beginning of each chapter. Matthew 26:36 has a slip printed with “Jesus” pasted over the misprint “Judas”.Light damp staining on the middles of the outer blank margins not affecting the text from Matthew 16 disappearing at Luke 6. Light damp staining on the upper corners into the text on Romans 4 fading out at First Corinthians 6. Faint to moderate staining to the upper one fourth page from First Corinthians 16 to First Timothy 1 then all over the pages in various degrees to the end of the book. Jude has some repaired closed tears and the lower blank corner repaired without loss. REVELATION LEAVES: Title page chapt. 1-2 with lower blank corner repaired without loss. This is the correct 1613 SHE leaf. The second leaf chapt. 3-5 has several repaired closed tears. This is also the correct 1613 SHE leaf. The third leaf chapt.6-7 is in excellent condition. This leaf has been inserted from the 1634 fourth issue. The fourth leaf chapt. 8-10 is in excellent condition. This leaf has been inserted from the 1634 fourth issue. The fifth leaf chapt. 11-13 is in good condition and has the lower blank corner repaired without loss. This leaf has been inserted from the 1634 fourth issue. The sixth leaf chapt. 14-16 is in good condition and has the lower blank corner repaired without loss. This leaf has been inserted from the 1634 fourth issue. The seventh leaf chapt. 16-18 is in fair condition with extensive tissue repairs. This leaf has been inserted from the 1634 fourth issue.
