The Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford University Press

Oxford University Press (OUP) is the publishing house of the University of Oxford. It is the largest university press in the world. Its first book was printed in 1478, while over a century later, the Press was officially granted the legal right to print books by decree in 1586. In 1633, King Charles the First granted a charter to the University permitting them to print all manner of books including the English Bible. This charter would not be acted upon for another 42 years until 1675 when they printed the King James Bible for the very first time. We offer here individual leaves from that edition. 

 University of Oxford Press is governed by a group of 15 academics, the Delegates of the Press, appointed by the vice- chancellor of the University of Oxford. The Delegates of the Press are led by the Secretary to the Delegates, who serves as OUP’s chief executive and as its major representative on other university bodies. Oxford University Press has had a similar governance structure since the 17th century. The press is located on Walton Street, Oxford, opposite Somerville College, in the inner suburb of Jericho.

For the last 400 years, OUP has focused primarily on the publication of pedagogical texts. It continues this tradition today by publishing academic journals, dictionaries, English language resources, bibliographies, books on Indology, music, classics, literature, and history, as well as Bibles and atlases.

Leaves noted as “Title Pages” are premium leaves and are an exceptional value. Title Pages are those found at the beginning of each book and contain beautiful engraved initials. Note- you are NOT ordering from the photo gallery, but from the list below. Photos are examples showing content and condition and may have already been sold. If you would like to see photos of the actual leaf you would like to purchase, simply contact us with your request. 

2.) Add the quantity of leaves you would like to purchase to your cart.

3.) Checkout as usual.

4.) VERY IMPORTANT ! You must contact us with your selection(s) after checkout. Please provide us with the name of the book and the chapter and verse numbers of each leaf ordered. (I.E. Exodus 24:8-25:40 etc.)

5.) We will ship your order the following business day via USPS First Class Mail along with our Certificate of Authenticity for each leaf.

6.) We highly recommend framing leaves for proper display and protection. An off the shelf frame may be used as long as the matting etc. is listed as “acid free”. Float frames that utilize two panes of glass so that both sides of the leaf may be viewed are excellent choices. Leaves measure 8 1/2″ tall by 6 1/4 ” wide.
