PRESENTING FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION- EXQUISITE GENUINE 345 YEAR OLD *KING JAMES BIBLE* PRINTED BY OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS AT THE SHELDONIAN THEATRE IN OXFORD. Small quarto 8.5 x 6.5 x 2.75 inches. Herbert #745. INCLUDING 1.) THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER. 2.) THE OLD TESTAMENT WITH THE APOCRYPHA. 3.) THE NEW TESTAMENT. 4.) THE WHOLE BOOK OF PSALMS COLLECTED INTO ENGLISH METER. Pages are in very good condition throughout with some scattered foxing/browinging in places.
This is perhaps the earliest edition of the English Bible which has dates added in the margins based upon the famous work Annales Veteris et Novi Testamenti (1650-4), [see inset above] by James Ussher (1581- 1656), Archbishop of Armagh. Ussher dated the creation as year 1 counting time forward systematically using Biblical chronology and genealogy. He dated Job 2400, the Nativity 4000, and the exile of John to Patmos Island in year 4093. Biblical Historians generally agree that this took place in 90 A.D. It has been about 1900 years since this event and when added to the 4093 years that led up to this event= approx. 6,020 years have passed to today showing the true age of the EARTH. In 1680, Oxford University Press printed their first folio edition of the King James Bible which included an index to accompany these marginal dates.
Oxford University Press (OUP) is the publishing house of the University of Oxford. It is the largest university press in the world. Its first book was printed in 1478, while over a century later, the Press was officially granted the legal right to print books by decree in 1586. In 1633, King Charles the First granted a charter to the University permitting them to print all manner of books including the English Bible. This charter would not be acted upon for another 42 years until 1675 when they printed the King James Bible for the very first time.
University of Oxford Press is governed by a group of 15 academics, the Delegates of the Press, appointed by the vice- chancellor of the University of Oxford. The Delegates of the Press are led by the Secretary to the Delegates, who serves as OUP’s chief executive and as its major representative on other university bodies. Oxford University Press has had a similar governance structure since the 17th century. The press is located on Walton Street, Oxford, opposite Somerville College, in the inner suburb of Jericho.
For the last 400 years, OUP has focused primarily on the publication of pedagogical texts. It continues this tradition today by publishing academic journals, dictionaries, English language resources, bibliographies, books on Indology, music, classics, literature, and history, as well as Bibles and atlases.
A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF A LATE ENGLISH RESTORATION PERIOD KING JAMES BIBLE AND A HISTORIC EXAMPLE WITH TONS OF SHELF APPEAL THAT WILL SURELY DELIGHT BOTH THE SENSES AND THE SOUL !
