“The ‘standard’ edition prepared by Dr. F.S. Paris, of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge and H. Therold, fellow of Magdalene. In this Bible a serious attempt was made to correct the text of King James’ version by amending the spelling and punctuation, unifying and extending the use of italics, and removing printers’ errors. Marginal annotations, which had been growing in some Bibles since 1660, although excluded from others, were finally received into the place they have occupied ever since, sundry new ones being added. Lloyd’s dates and chronological notes were also adopted and increased, and the marginal references were much enlarged.”
Herbert, A.S., Historical Catalogue of Printed Bibles, English 1525-1961. 1968. The British and Foreign Bible Society: London. page 274.
Dr. F. S. Scrivener, also a brilliant scholar on the King James Bible says:
“Dr. Paris performed his task with more diligence, exactness and moderation than his Oxford successor [i.e. Dr. Benjamin Blayney of Hertford College, 1769 ed.]
Scrivener, The Authorized Edition…, 1884, pp. 28.
Darlow and Moule in their catalog includes an entry for the quarto version of this edition and adds this regarding the folio:
” A folio edition of this Bible was also printed in the same year, but copies are very scarce: It is said that only six survived a fire at Dod’s warehouse. The British Museum possess a copy.” (This copy at the British Museum contains a circa 19th century manuscript note in support of this statement)
