C.1450 Manuscript Huge Medieval Antiphonal Breviary Manuscript Leaf on vellum
Very Good + Condition, Enormous Size 27 X 20 inches, Painted Initials. Frame size is 30 x 23 inches.
This is a beautiful manuscript leaf on heavy vellum from a medieval catholic breviary. Produced in a Spanish monastic scriptorium during the late middle ages c.1450, it is unusually large allowing it to be read or sung by a choir from a distance. Sheet measures 27″ x 20″ with 12 two inch lines of calligraphy per side, 3 wonderfully vivid hand painted initials measuring 2″ x 2″ and a fourth measuring 4″ x 4″. Features text in Latin from the psalms. Three blank corners on the verso with tape residue from an old mount.
The breviary is the book that contains all the texts, sung and spoken, of the divine office (the prayer liturgy of the catholic , which is focused on the recitation of psalms and the reading lessons.) in the middle ages, the daily celebration of the office occupied much of the waking day of monks and nuns. Very good +.
